Windows on UMass was an exhibition of student writing, artwork, and design focused on the Brutalist architecture of UMass Amherst and Dartmouth. Conceived by Professor Timothy M. Rohan, Chair of the UMass History of Art & Architecture Department, the show was curated, designed, and installed by myself and design partner Erica DeWitt in collaboration with Rohan. After cataloging and formatting roughly 100 student submissions, the exhibition opened in October 2024 and ran through December.
I designed a series of graphics inspired by early 1960s design, Googie architecture, and the work of Saul Bass — bold color palettes, representations of actual Brutalist windows on campus, and a set of retro icons based on the tools used to complete the assignments (paintbrush, pencil, camera). The icons were laser cut and mounted directly on the gallery wall. Promotional materials included three posters: one for the show and two for academic talks held in conjunction with the exhibit.
The main gallery wall featured a large title treatment alongside a 30 × 4 grid of 1' × 1' squares containing student writing, photography, and artwork. We also fabricated acrylic frames for one class's assignment and hung them in the gallery.
