X/Holyoke

This photographic survey documents Holyoke's abandoned buildings through their red "X" markers, state-mandated symbols that warn emergency responders of structural hazards. By isolating these marks as the sole point of color, the project transforms bureaucratic symbols into a visual catalog of buildings awaiting their next purpose. These structures represent not just what Holyoke was, but potential spaces for what it could become, such as artist studios, community centers, or new housing. The accompanying map plots these sites as opportunities across the city's landscape, revealing not just loss but possibility. Each red X marks both an ending and a placeholder for reinvention.
