Synchronizing Uncertainty: Graphics
Frenchtown, New Jersey
Synchronizing Uncertainty is an installation by artist, technologist and Amherst College faculty member, Brian House, exhibited at ArtYard in Frenchtown, New Jersey in 2025. Hundreds of electronic circuits populate a hushed space, erupting into pulsing light and sound as visitors move through — each circuit autonomous, negotiating its rhythm with its neighbors over a wireless mesh network.
I designed the graphic identity for the exhibition, including the logo, wall diagrams, and broader branding. The logo centers on a single visual idea: randomly spaced dots converging into evenly spaced dots, representing the movement from uncertainty to synchronization. This dot motif carried through the wall diagrams, which explained three aspects of the installation — how the individual circuits communicate, how the network operates as a system, and how synchronization appears in the natural and social world (clapping hands, fireflies, metronomes).
